Accessibility

For major city centres such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, access to hospitals are easy as there are numerous hospitals in these major centres. Most facilities carry most specialists, however, should hospitals not have the appropriate specialist a transfer can be arranged by ground ambulance or air ambulance if needed to a more appropriate facility for the member.

For centres in Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth, although the number of the facilities are small, they have most of the required specialists needed to effectively care and manage the patient.
Facilities in Polokwane, Rustenburg and Nelspruit are in areas that do not have easy access to facilities with appropriate specialist and care. In these cases, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, evacuation to an appropriate facility is organized by either ground ambulance or air ambulance to either Pretoria or Johannesburg for further care.

Ambulance Transportation

Ambulance transportation is divided among three major service providers used by Interhealth Technologies, however there are numerous other private ambulance services spread around the country that cater for ambulance transportation, when our major service providers are unable to. Air Ambulances such as Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing is mainly divided among two major service providers.
The following cities have easy access to Rotary Wing air ambulances: Johannesburg, Pretoria Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Durban and Nelspruit. However, as these services do try their utmost to have a doctor available on the aircraft, one cannot be guaranteed on the day of evacuation. Their crews include Advanced Life Support Paramedics, Nurses and when applicable, doctors.
Should any member need the use of the ambulance, it is advised that they carry their insurance details with them at all times. Also, they are encouraged to make a note of our number +27 11 622 8010. If no form of medical insurance can be found on the patient, they are then transported to the nearest Provincial Facility where management of the patient may be difficult.
The following cities have limited access to air ambulances, but do have access to ground ambulances that can take patients to the nearest most appropriate facility, where an air ambulance transfer can be done to an alternative facility:
Port Elizabeth and Rustenburg.

Outpatient Consultations

For general illnesses/outpatient consultations with a general practitioner/casualty doctor can also be arranged, but a 12 hour notification is needed unless in the case of an emergency. This will be arranged at the nearest GP consulting practice group/casualty to where the patient is at the time. Please note that some GP groups/casualty doctors prefer the members to pay and claim for these treatments, unless admitted or pre-arranged. There are numerous facilities available to both the local South African population and the visitors. For assistance with this we advise that the member contact our offices on +27 11 622 8010 for further assistance.
Most GP groups/casualty doctors have pharmacies on premises, radiology and some do have the necessary diagnostic equipment, dentistry and nurses and doctors available to help a patient. Some of the other GP practices do not have these readily available, but will be referred by the doctor. However, it is advised that the member calls +27 11 622 8010 should a member have any questions.

Inoculations and Vaccinations

Inoculations/vaccinations can also be arranged at travel clinics that we are contracted to or a facility that is able to provide the required inoculations or vaccinations. However, it is advised that the member visit their local GP in their country of origin to receive the relevant medications, inoculations or vaccinations that they do require. If a member does have a pre-existing condition, they must visit their local GP or specialist to confirm that they are able to travel and if they are, to ensure that they do have medication for their duration of their stay.
For a member travelling to South Africa, Interhealth will shortly be uploading inoculation and vaccination information required to come to South Africa. It is important for them to read up on the areas that they plan to travel to. They need to make special note of known Malaria areas and cholera areas. They are to also take special precautions to bring sun protection as South Africa has lovely weather most year round. Members can drink tap water in most urban areas, (however, members should confirm this with the accommodation providers in certain areas.) Most shopping outlets do sell mineral, purified and distilled water. Members are advised to drink plenty of fluids when visiting South Africa.
For those members who are planning to travel outside of South Africa to neighbouring countries, we advise that they are to make sure that they have their insurance documentation, their travel papers, relevant (if needed) medication as well as our telephone number +27 11 622 8010 in case of an emergency. We endeavour to ensure that should a member need hospital admission or doctors visits when visiting another country, they can call us on +27 11 622 8010 and we will be able to assist the member in the case of an emergency.

Domestic and International Flights

As with any event of this nature, especially in a country and region where we are, it is expected that immediate access to flights could be problematic, not to say expensive. Indications are that most airlines operating in the region, as well as international carriers travelling to South Africa, are planning to lay on extra flights during the tournament. Most local airlines will be operating on a 24 hour basis, as will most local airports.
There will be huge demand on charter aircraft during this period.
We are confident that in cases of emergency, flights should be available with reasonable notice. We are dealing with our local travel agents and commercial flight coordinators, who run a 24 hour operation.
ACCOMMODATION
There will be limited accommodation available during this period in most of the centres within the whole Southern Africa region. Accommodation will be at a premium price.
Most of the hotel accommodation is all being coordinated through a FIFA company, as well as a number of guest houses and private hotels.
We are confident that we should be able to arrange accommodation for emergency medical cases, however, there is no guarantee that this will be the case.
